John Edstrom, Headwaters Fly Fishing

Otsego, MN

Headwaters Fly Fishing Company conducts guided trips on many watersheds. I have been in the guiding business since 1987. After graduating from Augsburg College (Marketing/Economics) I was employed as a guide by Bristol Bay Lodge- Dillingham, Alaska from 1987-1989- 3 seasons. I returned to Minnesota each fall and found a niche for guiding here as well. Since then I have been guiding Spring Creek trout streams, Upper Mississippi and St.Croix rivers for smallmouth bass and western Lake Superior Rivers for steelhead. I also present several seminars each year on intro fly fishing, fly fishing for Smallmouth bass and fly fishing for steelhead. I have been a fly fishing school instructor each year since 1984 as well. Headwaters Fly Fishing Company was formed to fulfill the needs of fly fishermen that want to experience the thrills of fishing in the upper Midwest.

My beautiful wife Julie and I have two daughters (Kendall and Megan) and an English Setter (Chance). My family and I are fortunate to live in a region that has almost unlimited fishing opportunities. We live very close to the Upper Mississippi River Special Regulations section, which is one the premier Smallmouth Bass fisheries in the United States. Within 45 minutes is the Wild and Scenic St. Croix River, also ranked a top ten Smallmouth Bass river. We have the wild steelhead of western Lake Superior within a two-hour drive as well. Minnesota has been blessed with well over 10,000 natural lakes and many miles of rivers and streams to explore – more than a person could fish in their entire lifetime.

“I have been rowing many types of fly fishing craft from Alaska to Minnesota since 1987. I have found that Hyde Boats are the most maneuverable, true tracking boat made. Gliding in to a stiff summer breeze is no problem for my Low Profile Pro Series. Rowing through the fast water sections on our Midwestern Smallmouth Rivers can be tricky but the maneuverability of my Hyde makes it the perfect tool to get my clients through these areas and on to a comfortable, productive day of fishing. Rowing a Hyde all day can best be described as close to effortless compared to other craft on the market.”John Edstrom
