John Derbabian, Red Sky Guide Services

Harrison Twp., MI

As with most people that eventually guide, I have been fishing all my life. It has been a passion that I like to share with others. I have been very fortunate over the years to do my share of catching and now it brings me great satisfaction to help others experience the screaming drag from a 25lb. King, enjoy the beautiful river, and provide a quality outdoor experience. I especially enjoy working with clients that are new to fly fishing. To be there and experience their first hookup on a fly rod is awesome. I enjoy fly tying and providing my clients with my own fly’s. I am also a big fan of Hot Shotting and trying new techniques to seduce Spring Steelhead.

During my off days, you can find me walking the fields of Iowa for Pheasants, floating the rivers of Montana and Idaho for Cut’s, Browns, and Bow’s, searching for Tarpon in Tampa Bay, hunting the mighty Whitetail, or chasing ducks. Every now and then I even get to pick up the Spey or Switch rod and do some river fishing myself. I enjoy everything about the outdoors and I’m very involved in many different activities.

Presently I own and operate Red Sky Guide Service in Michigan. This is my 14th year as a licensed guide. I specialize in Fly Fishing and Hot Shotting/Spin Casting on the Pere Marquette River only (my true love). I am on the Pro-Staff for Rio Fly Lines, TFO Rods and Reels, and Simms Products. When it came down to choosing a boat, I had rowed and even built many. I chose the Cadillac of drift boats, I chose Hyde. When it comes to versatility, nothing comes close. With the different types of fishing I do, I needed a boat that I could reconfigure easily. The ability to add pedestals, take out pedestals and add bench seats, and add or remove casting braces is what makes Hyde the best. I currently run a Hyde XL Pro. This is truly luxury at its finest. With all the gear a guide needs – like lunch table, chairs, cooking gear, and multiple rods, etc. the added space of the XL Pro is a blessing and it rows and handles as well as my 14 footer. My clients are always comfortable and safe with the added stability of the XL Pro.

I don’t keep secrets about what is working and I’m willing to share information so you may enjoy your time outdoors. You can contact me with any questions you may have and I’ll answer them.
